Rudyard Lake near Leek in Staffordshire, which regularly hosts HMS for our annual ‘holiday’ event, is to crowdfund the purchase of a new boat for tours of the lake.
Since 2005 ‘Honey‘ , their trip boat has carried hundreds of passengers each year, being operated by volunteers from the Trust . She has raised some £5k per year for the benefit of the Lake visitors & users with the proceeds being ‘ploughed-back’ into a number of improvements at the Trust.
Sadly – and crucially – Honey must now be retired owing to both dry & wet rot having developed over the years, despite all the volunteer’s efforts. Although there are ideas of future use as a static exhibit, she will not be used as a trip boat again.
‘Honey‘ has a history which must not be forgotten as in fact she was the Captains launch on HMS OBDURATE from 1942 to 1966, seeing action in both the North Atlantic Convoys and Arctic Convoys, so the intention is to apply for Lottery Funding towards retiring her to a cradle berth alongside Rudyard Lake where she has brought enjoyment to so many people from school parties, birthday parties, children & adults with special educational needs, wedding groups & private groups – to say nothing of the scores of tourists visiting Rudyard Lake during the Summer months.
